Ashley has been part of a homeschool group this year that studied the Civil War. The class was divided into two groups--North and South--and we promptly declared her a traitor when she was assigned to the North. My husband's family has been in the same area of North Carolina for hundreds of years, and yet his daughter was a Yankee. It was bad enough he married a Mormon Yankee, but this...?
The class had an impressive list of requirements: watch three movies, memorize the Gettysburg address and a long scripture passage, write a hero report on a Civil War figure, write 10 shorter papers, memorize three Civil war songs, and read Uncle Tom's Cabin, Across Five Aprils, To Kill a Mockingbird, and a biography of Abraham Lincoln, and participate in the class discussions.
Those who completed the requirements were rewarded at the end of the semester with a replica Civil War sword, which was presented at a sword ceremony. Ashley worked hard and earned her sword, but it is funny to me that my very girly daughter has a sword in her closet.
